Dr. Olga Caballero

Senior Scientist

I am a Tenured Researcher of the Instituto de Micro y Nanotecnología (IMN-CNM) of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) where I belong to the FINDER Group. During my scientific career I have acquired a highly interdisciplinary profile. In my PhD time, I worked in non-linear optics (2007, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), and then moved on into a variety of fields such as Integrated Optics and Astrophysics Instrumentation. Lately my focus has been in the fields of Nanotechnology, Microelectronics and Thermoelectricity. Indeed, my current main research interests aim at combining Nanotechnology and Thermoelectricity. Specifically, the fabrication and characterization of novel thermoelectric devices for wasted heat harvesting for its conversion into electricity, as well as devising novel highly-complex nano-structures to enhance their thermoelectric properties for diverse applications and to explore their optical, magnetic, etc. possibilities. This undertaking is partially supported by two research projects of which I am principal investigator; microTENERGY, funded by the Ramon Areces Foundation, and co-PI of TERMHEUS, which is a National Research project. Besides, in the last years I have had competences in different national and international projects, e.g., the prestigious Ramon y Cajal fellowship (the Spanish centralized tenure track position), and the scientific coordination of an industrial project with the multinational energy company Repsol.

I have extensive international experience as demonstrated by several research stays abroad in renowned institutions such as Boston University, USA; Université des Alpes, France; Universität Bonn, Germany; NIMS, Japan. In my research career I have published a total of 63 articles (h21, SCOPUS) and 3 book chapters. Plus, 109 contributions in 68 international conferences. I have participated in 15 research projects and 2 industrial projects. I have organized 3 international workshops, directed 11 Master Thesis, and I have co-directed a PhD thesis. Also, as administrative responsibilities, I was appointed Deputy Director of the IMN in May 2021, becoming in 2022 the Director of the IMN-CNM. I am also part of the equality commission of the IMN and I am involved in different dissemination activities, such as giving talks in schools and institutes throughout Spain thanks to initiatives like Ciudad Ciencia or the Nanofestival.
